During my time here I had the honor of joining The Secret Sisters on the road. From their music, to their performances, and their interviews The Secret Sisters are woman of class and are extremely humble. I imagined they would be the moist poised elegant women I would ever encounter. And while they are, they are also hilarious and real people. They are the perfect balance of graceful southern woman, who also have a humorous side. They are just magnificent women.
My days at Olivia Management are extremely full. We work very hard to strive for excellence for our artists. And something I struggled with in the beginning was leaving my work at work. When I would leave at the end of the day there was still stuff on my to do list for the week. And being the perfectionist I am, I wanted to finish it all the second I got home that night. But through my time here I have learned the importance of being able to close my laptop and enjoying my personal life. And then getting up the next day to start off the day fresh and excited.
At Olivia Management, I have learned how essential breaks are. When you spend hours upon hours staring at a screen, you need to give yourself time to rest your eyes and your brain. When I learned to do this my work significantly improved. And I found myself far more refreshed throughout the day.
As two boss ass women, Maggie and Erin sure know how to work hard. But the reason they are so successful is because they know how to also play. There isn't a day at Olivia Management I found myself bored. And adventure was a thing I could count on. Between Maggie's love of fidget spinners, trips to Dave and Busters, and exploring some of East Nashville's most beautiful studios. I learned the value of bringing some fun to the table.
That is literally how she sounds you guys. That is all there is to say about that.
This is by far the most important. I have been surrounded by the most amazing artists. Who have proven to me time and time again, that you do not need to be snarky to get ahead. Be yourself through and through. Treat others with kindness and respect, and do not fear being yourself. I can now thank Matthew, Jill, Laura, and Lydia for that. They are the most kind, humble, loving, and genuine people.

It is finally Christmas season!!! Which means lots of drinking hot cocoa, donning fuzzy socks, decorating Christmas trees, and my favorite part, listening to Christmas music. And while I love listening to the classics, (who doesn't pull out their good ol' Michael Buble and Frank Sinatra albums during the Christmas season?) I also love discovering new music to get me in the Holiday spirit. At Olivia Management, I'm lucky to be surrounded by plenty of wonderful artists who also happen to have some Christmas ear candy for me to listen to this season. Today, Maggie asked me to write a blog post about my semester at Olivia Management. Today, I was in a very Christmas-y mood. Today, I was feeling very focused. So today, I wrote about all of my semester highlights in the form of the age old "'Twas the Night Before Christmas Poem." Please enjoy my dorky attempt at creativity! P.S. I added footnotes if you want more info about my experiences/life at Olivia Management.
‘Twas a week before Christmas (break), when all through the office,
Everyone was working, especially my bosses.
The Grammy’s were coming, and so were the Tours,
We worked so our artist would feel rest and assured.
Now as the semester came to a close,
I dreamt of the good times I loved the most.
Maggie in her Mardi Gra, and Erin’s champagne,
And Hush Kids and Matthew’s Pledge Campaigns. (There’s still time to pledge!)[1]
When out at the studio, the fans all arrived
To hear Matthew sing, and have their souls revived.[2]
Away to Barista, I flew like a flash
Needing some coffee, please, no decaf![3]
Hush Kids music, as beautiful as snow,
the amazing Jill and Peter, the greatest combo,
When what to my wondering ears should appear,
A new single from Jill, and I shed a tear.[4]
With two amazing bosses, so awesome and strong,
I knew in a moment, this was where I belonged.
More rapid than eagles, their ideas they came,
And they helped, and encouraged, and taught me the game.

Now back to Asana and check off that task!
As The Secret Sisters sing, their melodies fly,
When they meet audience ears, there’s not a dry eye.
So in the Ryman, their voices, they flew,
I am blessed to say, I was there too![8]
And then in a twinkling, I awoke to great news,
The Secret Sisters nominated for a Grammy, I didn’t hit snooze![9]
As Erin walked in, I was so proud to have learned,
Excellence from a woman who got what she earned.[10]
The office was my favorite, from its aesthetic to its poise
And always lying around, fidget spinner toys.[11]
On the wall, a calendar, so many shows ahead,
And Fridays I loved, because my office was my bed.[12]
The Emails---they are drafted! And Scheduled, how great!
Emails and my relationship is one of love and hate.[13]
The Canva[14] graphics are done, all tied up with a bow,
Now time to prepare for this weekend’s shows!
The wifi is out again, we gritted our teeth,
So we worked from a coffee shop, right down the street![15]
One of the perks of managing artists,
It can be done from anywhere, if you work your hardest.
It was spectacular and lovely, and just truly the best
Attending Razor and Tie’s Show During Americana Fest.[16]
It was a pleasure to meet Jill, and Peter as well,
Soon they would be Hush Kids, with music so swell!
So now at the end of a semester of work,
I share with you all my thoughts and perks
Working in an office, with so much support,
I didn’t even mind all of my Uber transport.[17]
I loved this internship, so much happiness it brings,
And because of that, I’ll be back in the Spring!
So from the intern, writing all this by candlelight,

[2] In November, Matthew Perryman Jones held a private concert for his biggest fans at the AMAZING studio he recorded at. I got to attend and hear him play some awesome new tunes as well as some old ones. It was definitely a highlight to see him play in such an intimate setting.
[3] Barista Parlor is a coffee shop right below our office in East Nashville. Some mornings, I’d splurge on a specialty latte, because, why not?

[5] One of the most important tasks at Olivia Management is making sure that information gets from our emails and into Artist Growth, which is what the artists use to see all of the details about their schedule and upcoming shows. Fun fact: The Artist Growth people are in the offices right next door to us!
[6] This is the site that we use to assign and check our tasks. Its basically the office to do list.
[7] Slack is our communication center. We chat on different channels on Slack depending on the topic. It makes it really easy to keep all information separated and organized.
[8] Seeing The Secret Sisters at the Ryman was breathtaking. Their music is so hauntingly beautiful, and that venue compliments their sound so well.
[9] The Secret Sisters are nominated in the “Best Folk Album” category for the Grammy’s!

[13] Drafting emails to remind fans of shows is tedious work. But so satisfying once you get them all drafted and ready to send out!
[14] Canva is the website we use to create graphics. Its an awesome tool. Creating graphics is one of my favorite things to do. It creative and serves a purpose.
[15] This happened a few times during the semester, but sometimes, its nice to get a change of scenery.
[16] This was the first time I went to a show for one of our artists back at the beginning of my internship and I was blown away. Jill and Peter gave such a spectacular performance.
[17] I don’t have a car, so I Uber to and from internship every day. I have a love hate relationship with Uber as well.

Last Thursday, the Grey's Anatomy cast and crew celebrated their 300th episode. In honor of this, Alexandra Patsavas, the show's music supervisor, chose 5 of the song-scene pairings she felt were most memorable on the show. And who made the list? You guessed it! Our very own Jill Andrews with her cover of "Total Eclipse of the Heart" in Season 10, Episode 12, "Get Up, Stand Up."

If you are a Matthew Perryman Jones fan then you know he is in the studio! In an effort to treat his fans, he decided to make a Pledge for his latest album. If you are a Jill Andrews fan, then you have heard the hype about her new band Hush Kids. With all the excitement around the office, I was reminded why I adore Jill so dearly. Jill is one of the most humble, down to earth humans I have ever met. I have so much admiration for Jill, because the person that she is on stage is the exact same person she is in her day to day life. She is a quirky, delightful, determined individual who treats everyone with kindness and respect. Jill is a breath of fresh air in an industry sometimes consumed with stress and greed.
As I reflected on my time working with Jill, I was reminded of my favorite music video of her Get Up, Get On. This video shows a different side of Jill than most people see, but a very important one. She sparks a serious conversation about the importance of taking care of yourself emotionally. So that when the worst hits, you are able to get up, build yourself back up, and move on. She shows the heart breaking aftermath of realizing she is being cheated on, and instead of losing her ability to keep going she- in the most Jill Andrews fashion- puts down her beers, wears a smile on her face, and leaves with the knowledge that she is worthy of so much more.
This is my favorite lyric, because it brings to attention that we all hide parts of ourselves that we believe are ' the war inside'. And we are not alone in doing that - these parts make us who we are. We should showcase those parts loud and proud because as Jill has flawlessly shown us, it pays off to be unapologetically yourself.

"What started as an arranged co-writing session turned into a few years, many songs, and a lot of big ideas. It seemed like the only path to take was to form a band and make a record with our favorite songs that we’d written. Thus, Hush Kids was born." -Hush Kids

Previously, I wrote an article about the History of Americana Music. With that in mind, along with The Secret Sister's UK run of their "You Don't Own Me Anymore" tour on the horizon, I wanted to learn more about Americana music in the UK. I found an awesome article on Billboard about how UK artists are now playing Americana music not only in at home, but also in the US. The Official Charts Company even added a weekly Americana chart, which launched before Billboard's renaming of its Folk album chart to Americana/Folk Albums. Yola Carter, AmericanaFest performer, is quoted throughout the article about the progress Americana has made in the UK:
"I really feel as though the [British] presence is being talked about. You've got to turn up, musically, and bring something substantial enough to the table that could butt up against the best that there are. The maturing of the industry in the U.K. has allowed us to get to that point where it's apparent that we exist, and that we're affiliated.” -Carter

As you well know, we are quite fond of our boss Erin Anderson. I'm sure if you're reading this you can repeat the general reasons why she's a terrific human, but here's a few reasons why her employees love her that may be new, even alarming, to some.
Erin knows that as a good boss, to keep your employees you must show them opportunities for growth in the company. She's taken time to answer many of my looming questions about the industry we work in, as well as gone so far as to set up development meetings for us at Marché on a regular basis (YUM). This month, she's even covering my ticket to CAA's Young Nashville party so that I can socialize with peers and friends in the biz.

Just recently, on World Mental Health Day, she could tell my spirit was waning as I'd endured a red-eye flight the day before. Rather than pushing us both to get through what was quite a dreary day weather-wise, she acknowledged that we'd gotten everything urgent done that day, and that we should go home. On another occasion, she made a point for me to read an article about mental health in the music industry. You're probably thinking, "Yikes, maybe she's dropping a not-so-subtle hint...", but the truth is, she genuinely cares that her employees aren't working themselves into oblivion. That's super meaningful to me because in an industry where we're constantly going, it's reassuring to know that I have someone in my corner who views mental health as something we should be checking in on just as often as we're checking in on the wellness and success of the business itself.

How great is it that we have four, FOUR fidget spinners in the office?! I'll tell you: really great. In this video, you don't see Erin fidging...she's in fact doing something constructive. But, I promise you she does fidge along with me.

Hopefully that quote doesn't lead you to think Erin is a serial killer! But she is seriously good at recognizing that you can't work for 8 hours straight with no breaks! It's important to take a breather, laugh about silly Facebook videos, chat about life or enjoy a nice visit to Calypso Cafe. One day this year, Erin looked at me and said, "I don't feel like working," and my mind immediately went to snacks. "Let's go to Jeni's," I replied. And without hesitation, she agreed, fell for my dubious charm and we enjoyed a nice 4pm ice cream break.

Before I even began my internship, I was so impressed by Erin. I had watched interviews of her speaking about entrepreneurship and even written a report about Olivia Management for my Entrepreneurship class. Being able to work with Erin and watch her grow this amazing company is so inspiring for a Music Business major about to graduate. She has made me feel more comfortable and ready to take on the Artist Management life!

Whether its buying lunch for the office, donuts for meetings, or tickets to a show, Erin will always go out of her way to make sure her employees/interns are enjoying life to the fullest. She also shares her knowledge without holding back. She wants us to succeed and gives us every chance to do so!

I had the opportunity recently to speak at the CD Baby DIY Conference about Artist Management, and as a part-time adjunct professor, it felt logical to me to structure my talk like a lecture. After the talk, I had so many artists approach me and thank me for giving them actionable steps and actually TEACHING them about the music business.
It dawned on me that unless you are a music business college student, there really aren't many opportunities to LEARN about the music business. Some things are hard to pick up just reading a book, and some skills require experience and wisdom.
So, here's my solution: I am excited to present the Educate! Series.
If I'm really honest, the constant barrage of music industry networking events can sometimes exhaust me. But the thought of having 4 nights to break big music industry questions down into actionable steps and teach them to interested parties makes me REALLY excited. Hope to see you there!

I have had the honor of spending time with Laura and Lydia during my internship at Olivia Management. It has been more than amazing. Not only are Laura and Lydia the definition of humble, loving, hard working, southern women; but they also love their fans with such passion and are very dedicated to being the best they can be for their fans.

On Monday night, I had the pleasure of selling merch for The Secret Sisters at their show at the Ryman where they opened for Jason Isbell. While selling, I noticed a bunch of people brought their own poster tubes and said they collected Hatch Show Posters. I learned that Hatch show posters are something a lot of fans/Ryman goers collect. Last night, there were only 174 posters printed for the first night of Jason Isbell's 6 night run at the Ryman. All 174 posters sold out within 45 minutes. It was crazy! Plus, they have a different poster for each night Jason is playing, which makes them even more collectible. This week has been a hard one. Our hearts are with the victims and families affected by the Las Vegas shooting. We believe music is about bringing joy and bringing us together. Did anyone notice an email from Spotify last week talking about your time capsule playlist? I didn't even look at the email until I saw a few articles about it online. After I read about it, I went back to the playlist and was pretty impressed with the accuracy of my time capsule (Maybe just because I'm known to still listen to some good ol' Hilary Duff every now and then.) Basically, the playlist anticipates and collects songs Spotify thinks you were listening to 10 years ago based on what you've played in the app. If you are a Spotify listener, go dig through your email and find your time capsule playlist!
